SANTE – ENVIRONNEMENT

EQUITAREA

ARIES

ARtificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services, Ecoinformatics Collaboratory, University of Vermont (UVM), USA
ARIES redefines ecosystem services assessment and valuation in decision-making. The ARIES approach to mapping benefits, beneficiaries, and service flows is a powerful new way to visualize, value, and manage the ecosystems on which the human economy and well-being depend.

CICES

The Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) developed from the work on environmental accounting undertaken by the European Environment Agency (EEA). It supports their contribution to the revision of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) which is currently being led by the United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD).

COPI

The Costs of Policy Inaction – the case of not meeting the 2010 biodiversity target
The continuing loss of biological diversity will cost the global economy up to 14 trillion Euros by 2050, which is equivalent to 7% of the projected global GDP in 2050. This is the result of a study on the cost of policy inaction (COPI) with regard to the EU’s 2010 biodiversity target. Ecologic contributed to the assessment by establishing a comprehensive inventory of economic valuations of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The study was presented on 29 May 2008 at the Ninth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-9) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Bonn. It is part of a large-scale review on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB).

ECOSYSTEM MARKETPLACE

The Ecosystem Marketplace, a project of Forest Trends, is a leading source of news, data, and analytics on markets and payments for ecosystem services (such as water quality, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity). We believe that by making accessible information on policy, finance, regulation, science, business, and other market-relevant factors, markets for ecosystem services will one day become a fundamental part of our economic system, helping give value to environmental services that, for too long, have been taken for granted. In providing free reliable market information, we hope not only to facilitate transactions (thereby lowering transaction costs), but also to catalyze new thinking, spur the development of new markets and the infrastructure that supports them, and achieve effective and equitable nature conservation.

ECOSYSTEM SERVICES PROJECT

(CSIRO sustainable ecosystems, Australia) The Ecosystem Services Project is a collaborative natural resource management project studying the services people obtain from their environments, the economic and social values inherent in these services and the opportunities that can arise from considering these services more fully in land management policies and decisions.

Nature value explorer

Ecosystem services are often not fully appreciated in policy decisions because they are not fully captured in commercial markets nor adequately quantified in terms comparable with commercial services traded in markets. Ignoring the value of these ecosystem services may lead to overexploitation of ecosystems or unbalanced policy and investment decisions.

The Flemish government recognises the importance of these ecosystem services (ESS). The department Environment, Nature and Energy (LNE) asked a team of economists and ecologists of VITO and the universities of Antwerp and Amsterdam to demonstrate the value of ESS in Flanders.
